World wide exports of semiconductors to Russia have plummeted by 90 percent due to the fact the United States and allies slapped export controls on Moscow about its invasion of Ukraine, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo explained on Wednesday.

Raimondo, speaking at an once-a-year Commerce Department conference, also said that controls positioned on Russia’s aerospace sector were hammering its capacity to generate income and guidance military aviation.

On Wednesday, Raimondo also doubled down on threats to “shut down” China’s top rated chipmaker SMIC if it is observed to be giving chips to Russia.

“What if SMIC or other Chinese-based mostly semiconductor firms are found providing chips to Russia?” she explained. “We will shut them down and we can, because pretty much every chip in the world and in China is designed working with US devices and program and I intend to make good on that commitment if it’s required.”
